Sleeve Gastrectomy is indicated for people who are significantly overweight and have tried other treatments to achieve weight loss.

Sleeve Gastrectomy is a technique that is performed by laparoscopic surgery (without opening) and consists of removing a part of the stomach to control the weight (the part that dilates and has the capacity to hold the volume of food). We form, as its name indicates, an elongated tube with the stomach instead of the usual wine boot shape of the stomach.

If you are interested in sleeve gastrectomy but have doubts, you can request your first free appointment, by video conference, from your place of residence at our clinic in Madrid.

The Sleeve Gastrectomy, also known as Gastric Sleeve, is a restrictive technique of bariatric surgery to treat obesity very much used nowadays together with the gastric bypass.

This intervention consists of reducing the size of the stomach to limit its capacity, removing part of it. In this way, the amount of food entering the stomach is restricted, resulting in a gradual and lasting weight loss.

Sleeve gastrectomy works in two different ways in weight control.

On the one hand it causes a sensation of satiety for mechanical reasons, that is, once the technique has been carried out the stomach is smaller and it fills up before.

On the other hand, the part of the stomach that is removed is the one that produces a hormone called Ghrelin which is partly responsible for the feeling of hunger.

Once this part of the stomach is removed, Ghrelin decreases in the blood which contributes to the feeling of lack of appetite that this technique produces.

Sleeve gastrectomy is a technique that has been progressively increasing in recent years in Spain as it has similar results to other classical techniques but with fewer risks and side effects.

The risk rate is low, it is a safe, effective and long-lasting technique with a faster recovery than Gastric Bypass.

The main advantage is that it is a technique that does not require extensive long-term monitoring as it does not require adjustments and does not generally require frequent monitoring of vitamin and micronutrient levels.

The degree of obesity is calculated by dividing the weight by the height multiplied by itself. In this way we obtain the Body Mass Index: BMI=weight/height2. Calculate your BMI here

Sleeve gastrectomy is indicated for people with obesity grade II or above, that is, with a body mass index of at least 35.

It is also indicated in patients with very high ranges of obesity as a preliminary step to another technique, the duodenal switch, which achieves the greatest weight loss of all techniques.

Like the rest of the techniques we perform at the Jesus Lago Institute of Obesity and Aesthetics to treat obesity, we all perform them by laparoscopy, which makes the post-operative period comfortable and recovery very fast.

Sleeve gastrectomy, as in other techniques, needs a follow-up to achieve the best result.

During the first month, we will establish a progressive diet in consistencies that will allow us to have a comfort to start from the second month a normal feeding.

Follow-up is essential in order to learn new eating behaviours that, with the help of surgery, will allow us to lose adequate weight without side effects and in the long term.

Your ideal weight

The IMC/BMI is used to classify the state of the person, and is calculated from the formula: weight (kg) / height (m2). This is a common calculation for both men and women. Remember that this nutritional index only applies to adults.

  • IMC/BMI is less than 18.5, it corresponds to "underweight."
  • IMC/BMI between 18.5 and 24.9, "normal" or healthy weight value.
  • IMC/BMI is between 25.0 and 29.9, it corresponds to “overweight”.
  • IMC/BMI is 30.0 or higher, it corresponds to “obesity”.
  • To calculate your IMC/BMI, see the IMC/BMI Calculator.
