The adjustable gastric banding is a method of permanent weight control with a proven long-term effectiveness similar to other methods such as gastric bypass and far above endoscopic methods such as the intragastric balloon or the POSE.
It is indicated for those people whose weight is more than double of what should be the ideal weight, who have a BMI above 30, who suffer from morbid obesity or who, after several failed treatments, have not been able to reach a healthy weight.

The gastric band is a silicone ring that is placed in the upper part of the stomach. This ring is connected by a thin tube to a reservoir that is located under the skin and that allows the adjustment of the gastric band, that is, it allows to regulate the passage of food through the ring placed around the stomach. In this way, the gastric band acts by inducing early satiety, causing the person who has it in place to feel satisfied quickly, thus reducing the volume of food and the calories ingested, which is transformed into weight loss.
It is an intervention that is normally performed under general anesthesia and usually lasts between 45 and 90 minutes depending on each patient.
It is performed by means of a laparoscopic technique that is not very invasive.
The gastric band can be adjusted after the operation. Normally weekly adjustments are made at the beginning and spaced out as the patient loses weight. It can be removed at any time through another laparoscopic intervention, if necessary or if the patient requires it.
One of the great advantages of gastric banding is the speed with which the patient is discharged. Generally, the patient remains hospitalized for 24 hours and without postoperative pain. Since the normal anatomy of the digestive tract is not altered, there are practically no risks. On the other hand, although the adjustable gastric band is designed to be maintained for life, its removal in expert hands is simple and returns the digestive tract to its normal anatomy.
Gastric banding is a safe, effective and durable technique for obesity control. It is also one of the most used in the United States and Europe due to its simple placement, low risk index and the possibility of controlling the level of adjustment of the gastric band on the stomach in consultation. Other factors that make it the most demanded method are its reversibility and the absence of long term controls since, by not modifying the digestive system, it does not produce alterations in the nutrients or vitamins.
Since the gastric band is never removed, weight can be effectively controlled in the long term. In other techniques, such as the intragastric balloon, in which the mechanism that caused the weight loss is removed once it has occurred, there is an implicit risk that a setback will occur and the patient will gain weight again.
The degree of obesity is calculated by dividing the weight by the height multiplied by itself. This way we obtain the Body Mass Index: BMI=weight/height2 and you can calculate your BMI Calculator here if you wish.
Do not hesitate to make an appointment with Dr. Jesus Lago Oliver, so that by studying your case individually he can inform you about all the possibilities
Remember that you should always consult with a bariatric surgery surgeon so that by analyzing your situation he can indicate the most appropriate intervention.
For the placement of an adjustable gastric band to be successful, a physical and psychological evaluation of the patient is necessary to determine if he or she is prepared to carry out the entire treatment.
The adjustable gastric band is one of the most proven methods and on which there is more experience accumulated worldwide and in our centre. In the last 10 years, 160,000 bands have been implanted worldwide. In fact, it is currently the most widely used technique in Europe and it is beginning to become widespread in our country.
According to a study carried out by the Jesús Lago Institute on the patients operated on in our centre, 70% are women and 30% men. The average age of the patients who have had gastric banding is 37 years old, who had an average weight of 115 kg with an average BMI of 42 and an average height of 1.63 cm.
The excess weight in most cases has been 55 kg and the average evolution in weight loss once the gastric band has been implanted has been 7.6 kg in one month, 18.25 kg of loss after 6 months, a year we have achieved an average weight loss of 30 kg. When our patients have reached the second year follow up, they have had an average weight loss of 37 kg and after three years they have reached 48 kg of loss, maintaining these results in a stable way in the long term.

The IMC/BMI is used to classify the state of the person, and is calculated from the formula: weight (kg) / height (m2). This is a common calculation for both men and women. Remember that this nutritional index only applies to adults.
